I'm going to paint you a picture:
A woman walks her dog, early in the morning. The dog barks at a stray cat. The cat runs off...dashes into a backyard, up a tree, jostles a nest of robins. Mama robin flies out of the nest in wide circles, assessing the threat of the cat...
Meanwhile, a man sits outside on his patio. Sipping his morning beverage of choice: coffee, tea, green juice, whichever. He is relaxed yet his mind is heavy. He is burdened, he has a decision to make that weighs heavily on him. he lost in a cyclone of thoughts and worry. The robin swoops above his head on her approach back toward the nest, capturing the man's attention. And for a moment, he is transported. He notices the bird, and his focus goes there. To her wings, her flight, her freedom. And his thoughts...find freedom. And takes a deep breath. He looks around his yard. He closes his eyes and smiles. "I know what to do..." he thinks.
Later, that man goes into his office, clear on his decision. He gets into a car accident. A local young woman witnesses the whole thing and is forever moved by it. She sat with the injured man, spoke with him, wanted to help him. The man died, we don't know anymore about him. But the young woman, having seen this accident, having made the connection, thereby devotes her life to medicine and healing. Compassion.
Years later, a young woman goes into labor in her vehicle. Our new doctor, now an established family doctor, once again, bears witness. And this time, she helps bring life into the world, ensuring a healthy delivery. She saw life leave and she saw life arrive. So moved by her perspective, she writes a memoir.
Her memoir inspires a young poet, who writes verse after verse about perspective, life, love, meaning, and what it all means. The young man lives life inspired and seeks to change the world. He writes poem after poem, shares them. They don't seem to be moving people the way that he thought.
Many years in the future, new communities are coming together. Humans are evolving. People are changing values, priorities, missions...our purpose is changing. A young girl comes across an old book of poetry that seems to speak to exactly what she's feeling, as she embarks into a brand new world of hope and compassion. And these words help lead her and her peers into a new way of thinking, their mantra, their call-to-action, is based on the words of our young man who never thought he'd reach anyone.
Walk your dog. Talk to the stranger. Write the book. Make the movie. Take the class. Do all of it.
It's all connected. We...are all connected to each other, as Life flows in and out, through us, between us. And if we pay attention and appreciate that, we can write quite a story together. Instead of fighting against the old, rather than raising our fists...we can simply...build the new.
All of it matters. <3
